El corte decide cuánta luz te devuelve.Cut decides how much light comes back to you.
Of the 4Cs, cut is considered the one with the greatest impact on a diamond’s beauty.1 It determines how light enters, reflects inside and exits.1
Tres razones.Three reasons.
-
01
Color and clarity come from the crystal; cut comes from the cutter.2 It’s the only one of the 4Cs the cutter directly controls.3
-
02
Brilliance, fire and scintillation all depend on the cutter’s choices.3 Two diamonds with the same weight, color and clarity can look very different.3
-
03
Cambia incluso cuánto parece medirIt even changes how big it looks
A well-proportioned diamond reflects light across its whole surface and can look bigger than a heavier one.1
AnatomíaAnatomy
Las partes de un diamante. The parts of a diamond.
A round brilliant has 57 or 58 facets. From top to bottom, its three main parts are the crown, girdle and pavilion.4 Choose any part or measurement in the diagram to see what it is and why it matters.
Choose a part or a measurement in the diagram.
TablaTable
The flat, horizontal facet on top of the diamond.5 Why it matters: its size works together with the crown and pavilion angles.6
CoronaCrown
The upper part, from the girdle up to the table.5 Why it matters: its facets split the light leaving the diamond into colors, and that’s fire.5
The narrow band that separates the crown from the pavilion.5 Why it matters: too thick, and it carries weight you can’t see; too thin, and the diamond is more prone to damage. GIA lowers the cut grade in both cases.6 It’s also where the report number is usually laser-inscribed.7
The lower part, from the girdle down to the culet.5 Why it matters: it decides whether light returns to your eyes. If it’s too shallow or too deep, light escapes through the sides or bottom.5
Culet
The tiny facet at the bottom point, meant to keep the tip from chipping.5 Why it matters: its size affects the face-up look; when it’s small or absent, you can’t see it with the naked eye.5 In GCAL 8X rounds, the culet must be graded none or very small.8
ProfundidadDepth
The total height, from the table to the culet.5 Why it matters: at the same weight, a deep diamond has a smaller diameter and a shallow one looks wider, but one that’s too shallow loses brilliance.9 GIA downgrades diamonds that carry extra weight in steep crowns or deep pavilions.6
The width of the diamond at the girdle. Why it matters: at the same weight, it varies with depth; according to GCAL, a 1 ct round measures roughly 6.20 to 6.80 mm across.9
The angle between the crown facets and the girdle plane.5 Why it matters: it affects fire, because it determines where light exits and splits into color.5
The average angle between the main pavilion facets and the girdle plane.5 Why it matters: it drives brilliance above all.5 For a GCAL 8X round, the window is just four tenths of a degree: 40.6° to 41.0°.8
There’s no single formula for a perfect cut: table size, crown angle and pavilion angle work together.6 That’s why GIA judges the proportions as a whole, not one by one.3

La luzLight
El camino de la luz.The path of light.
A well-cut diamond sends more light up through the crown.5 If light leaks out through the pavilion, the diamond looks dark and lifeless.10
What to look for with the naked eye: dark areas in the center, under the table or near the girdle may mean the cut was sacrificed to get more out of the rough. A bright, even pattern shows precision.6
Demasiado bajo · El pabellón es demasiado plano: parte de la luz no vuelve hacia ti.Too shallow · The pavilion is too flat: some light never comes back to you.5
Well proportioned · Light bounces off the pavilion and comes back to you through the crown, as brilliance and fire.5
Demasiado profundo · El pabellón es demasiado inclinado: parte de la luz se escapa en lugar de volver hacia ti.Too deep · The pavilion is too steep: some light escapes instead of coming back to you.5
PrecisiónPrecision
Corazones y flechas.Hearts and arrows.
In a precisely cut round, a special viewer reveals eight arrows from the top and eight hearts from the bottom.2 The more even they are, the better aligned the facets.
Esquema ilustrativo.Illustrative diagram.
There’s no single standard for hearts and arrows: each lab and seller applies its own criteria.1112 GCAL 8X requires them in rounds as one of its eight criteria.13 We also check for them in every round ourselves.
¿Y el certificado? What about the lab report?
GIA’s cut grade is based on each diamond’s proportions and design, and it exists only for rounds.141 AGS Ideal traces light rays through a 3D scan,14 and GCAL 8X measures brilliance and optical symmetry on photographs of the diamond itself.2 AGS Ideal and GCAL 8X are among the few reports that look at light.
